CC, I am one the Anonymouses (Anonymi?) from the previous thread, the one you just replied to. I give up anonymity for pseudonymity.
"I'm not sure that Standing is right"
Apologies, may have been worded badly. What I mean is that I'm sure if you sift through the vast sea of crap that gets posted daily on the web, you will find an example of a leftist/liberal doing what he says. But it is certainly not a general phenomenon, and it is a smear to hint at devious evil lefties, without even attempting to provide an example.
-------
I also would like to draw attention to two comments I made earlier, to see the thoughts of others, since they are relevant here.
on the subject of Douglas Murray. I think that speech he gave a few years back is a perfect example of what people are talking about.
(I disagree with FR that this is the "world's first "anti-Jihadist" mass-murderer" - even if we limit it to Bin Laden-inspired Jihadism, surely the first would be Bill Clinton when he bombed that pharmaceutical plant?)
I also have a query about Derrida over at dsquared's place which others may be able to help with:
Well yes, Alex, it's possible that Edmund "Hegemony" Standing was thinking of real examples. Nutter goes on rampage, therefore capitalism is wrong is precisely the sort of argument the professional trolls and kneejerk contrarians at Spiked would have made when they still identified as Marxist-Leninist revolutionaries.
Me, I don't know about this cultural stuff. I thought Hegemony was the girl in the Harry Potter books.
It's not just a smear; he doesn't know of any examples. He just talking about how he thinks the left thinks. I think he's working from a pretty dreadful model of "left wing thought" (which doesn't distinguish between genuine -- but not notorious -- Stalinists like Harry Hatchet (who started HP) and mild and gentle social democrats).
As someone (Andrew Adams on checking) said on the previous thread, Mettaculture really was very good at describing Hegemony's problem. Or as good as you can be if you deny yourself the use of the term "pretentious wazzock." I feel bad for taking the piss out of Mettaculture before.
I'm think of writing a piece on Melanie Phillips in a bit, but she surprised me today in coming out against WWII. I always thought she was in favour of fighting Nazism (given she was born after 1945). But no, WWII was evil.
There is never any justification for mass murder. None.
Wonders. They never cease.
OK. I kid. I'm sure MP has two get-outs. Germans aren't people and/or it's not murder if you're doing the right thing. Breivek seems to have believed that some fairly sappy social democrats were as Usama bin Laden would put it, "the Great Shaytan" and he certainly thought he was doing the right thing.
DA will be speaking about conspiracy theories at the end of next month.
So, that's a journalist; two wanktank researchers, a psychologist and all-purpose two skeptics. None of these, as far as I can see, have any background in anything approaching parapolitics. That sounds about as scholarly as it does open-minded.
I really don't understand why people are trying to 'engage with' Edmund Standing. If you read his ridiculous 'white liberals' articles, what became very clear was the fact that there's no system to his writing, thought, or research. As a small example, he simultaneously poured scorn on the 'Winterval'-bans-christmas stories and then actually used these stories as evidence that the left is bad.
Of course he's going to go on the offensive and seize on straw men, because he's onside with a shitload of ABB's opinions and is allied to some of the biggest loons around (e.g. he has worked for douglas murray in the past - incidentally i still don't understand why people in the media don't make more of that speech, which Murray has never actually disowned, instead claiming he as 'misquoted').
What i find funniest about his straw man invention is that he hasn't managed to find a single example of the 'leftie lunacy' he's decrying, ANYWHERE on the internet.

Oops, I always thought she was the Mitford sister no-one ever talks about.
