Christopher Hitchens Newsnight.30th May 2006
The Dude has just drawn attention to a previously unknown reason (to me anyway) for the Iraq fiasco. Apparently if The US and it's coalition partners hadn't invaded Iraq then Turkey, Iran and Saudi Arabia would have invaded.

"The Dupe" please Vinnie.
Did he say that? Er, OK, given what I know of CH, his reaction should be "good (serves 'em right for the Kurds), good (anti-Semites; oi towel-heads, have one for Rushdie!), and good (anti-Semite misogynist bastards, the lot of you!)."
Did I miss something? DId I miss Turkey accomodating his friends the Kurds? Is Iran on our side? (And didn't Saddam try invading before, with our chemical weapons -- and fail?) And Saudi Arabia, what's to like? There's not a nastier regime outside the pages of the Old Testament: women, non-believers, the poor, they hate them. Hey, Rummy, we have a target.
been an argument of his for a while.
When it became obvious that the meme of Iraq as a deadly dangerous totaliarian regime bent on world conquest fell apart, Christopher was the first to argue the alternative that it was in fact a weak state that was bound to fall apart at some time leding to all out war in the ME as Turkey and Iran invaded it.
