A Plea
Ok, can anyone actually read the Nick Cohen piece in the New Statesman? I've tried following links from Harry and Norm, but every time I hit this firewall they have which thinks I've read more than my ration of one piece per day.
Look, the Statesman's restrictions are just about the silliest on the interwebs. tehgrauniad got where it is today by being free. Anyway, the Staggers hasn't made any money since long before I abandoned it in the early 80s (and in those days, Martin Amis was literary editor, so it had something going for it). It's just a modern folly, an overt show of a rich man's largesse. "Big Issue, mate?" "No chance, I have Nick Cohen and Yasmin Alibhai-Brown to support." There's some old left (dread words!) phrase spinning round my head. Something about "property" and "theft."
Bloody Frogs.

I can email you a copy if you're desperate. The highlight is where he characterises the entirety of the Arab-Israeli conflict as "the foundation of the State of Israel and the defeat of every Arab attempt to destroy it".

The Guardian didn't run a competition entitled "Nick Cohen and David Aaronovitch are enough to make a good man anti-semitic", it was on their 'talk' forums, which have a whole host of idiocy. It was taken down I think when someone noticed.
And if you are righting about anti-semitism and the left surely the starting point should be the "kosher conspiracy" cover of the new statesman?
"Ok, can anyone actually read the Nick Cohen piece in the New Statesman?"
I'm afraid it was too much of a challenge, I gave up after two paragraphs.
The interesting thing about that Guardian thread was, as well as being a pretty disgusting piece of trollery, it's factually inaccurate. Aaro isn't Jewish by either of the normal standards (the matrilineal or the religious). He doesn't go to synagogue and his mother wasn't Jewish although his father, Sam Aaronovitch, was.
I see from the article that NC isn't Jewish either, apparently; just goes to show there's no troll like a Nazi troll.
Meanwhile, the article itself is actually reasonably commonsensical by the standards of normal Decent discourse on this subject, although a purist might have suggested that if you're going to draw conclusions about "the left", then it might make sense to have a few examples drawn from, well, the Left rather than the MCB. Also rather disappointing that he seems to have swallowed the whole Normblog "it is de facto anti-Semitic to criticise Israel unless you spend equal time criticising (insert name here)" line of argument whole.
hey, it's on nickcohen.net!
Is it my browser, or do none of the links or comments work?
